If your Mac doesn't start up all the way, or you also want to restore the macOS you were using when you created the backup, follow the steps to restore both macOS and your files. You can leave it on automatic, and when you are away, when it's time for the next backup Time Machine will try to start, but when it can't find the drive it will silently stop trying. It won't bug you at all. And when you get home, it will do its thing on its own after you plug in your backup drive again. The only thing you have to remember is to plug the drive in.
I use a Time Capsule, so I don't even have to remember that. As soon as Time Machine senses it's on the network with my Time Capsule backup on it, it knows it can do its backups. The backups happen whether or not I remember or am paying attention. I just don't think about it. So to answer your question, that's what most people do. They leave it on automatic and let Time Machine figure out whether a backup can proceed, because if the backup drive isn't available, Time Machine will quietly step aside and wait.
